Staubbachfall

(Staubachfall, Staubbachfälle)

The Staubbachfall (Staubbach waterfall in English) is a gorgeous waterfall in the village Lauterbrunnen, in the region Berner Oberland, Switzerland.

StaubbachfallDriving from Interlaken to the Lauterbrunnen tal (valley) you can’t miss the Staubbachfall. Already from a far distance you can see the Staubbachfall plunging down over the cliff at the right side of the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Staubbachfall is probably one of the most photographed waterfall in Switzerland. With a single drop of 300 meter it is (one of) the highest single drop waterfalls in Switzerland.

In summertime often a warm wind is blowing through the valley. The name “Staub” means spray: Staubbachfall is the waterfall where the water gets sprayed when falling down.

The Staubbachfall is being fed with melted snow from the mountains Bietenhorn (2.755 m) and Wyssbirg (2.616m). Early summer there is still a lot of snow on the mountains and with warm weather this is the perfect period to visit waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Staubbachfall waterfall walk

Staubbachfall-LauterbrunnenFrom the village centre you already have an awesome view on the waterfall but it only gets better when you walk to the bottom of the Staubbach waterfall. There is a path up that leads to a tunnel and a sort of stone stairs path up. Although is goes up and up and up you will be rewarded with some great views on the Lauterbrunnen valley. At the end of the path you are standing at the behind the Staubbach waterfall.

The path up isn’t open 24/7, you have to check this on the website of the tourist office of Switzerland-Lauterbrunnen.

The flow can vary a lot, depending on the season, but when there is enough water coming down this is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Switzerland.

Undoubtedly the Lauterbrunnen valley is the number 1 valley for waterfalls in Switzerland. Lauterbrunnen means “only sources” which refers to the meany streams coming down the mountains. There are 72 waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen valley from which Staubbachfall and Trummelbachfall (in a cave) are the most famous ones.

Also the highest waterfall in Switzerland are located in the Lauterbrunnen valley: Spissbachfall, StaldenbachfallMürrenbachfall and Staubbachfall.

In the Lauterbrunnen valley there are many other waterfalls (72) but my favorite are: Sefinefall, Talbachfall, Holdrifalle, Schmadribachfall (tip), Trummelbachfalle (tip), Spissbachfall, Mürrenbachfall.

Besides chasing waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen valley it a perfect base for hikes, paragliding or skydiving. The year 2005 was the last time I was in the Lauterbrunnen valley and the pictures I took where still analog. Visiting Switzerland again stands high on my wishlist but Switzerland is also the most expensive country in Europe. Nevertheless it is also one of the most beautiful countries in Europe.
