Cascata del Pozzón
(Pozzón di Osogna, Pozzone di Osogna)
Cascata del Pozzón (or Pozzón di Osogna) is heaven on earth if you like swimming under a waterfall, want to dive of a waterfall and if you want gorgeous pictures. Cascata del Pozzón is easy to reach and is located in the village Osogna/Riviera, Ticino Switzerland.
After visiting two other waterfalls along motorway 2 (E35), in the summer of 2024, we decided we also wanted to swim and relax at a scenic waterfall. Cascata del Pozzón is perfect for that reason although it can become quite crowded in weekends…
When driving on motorway 2 /E35 to the south, take the exit Biasca (exit 44) and drive to Osogna. In Osogna there is a parking near the main road especially made for visitors of Cascata del Pozzón (gps 46.314607, 8.986134). We first wanted to park our car at the town square but (again) a very unfriendly guy made us clear (in Italian) that this was prohibited: my advise, place signs that it is only for locals, because this I understand and I understand that local people don’t want any inconvenience!
From the parking take the small road up and go left at the road sign ‘in Scópp’. After the chapel you can go right to the lower part of the waterfall or you can walk a little up to the upper part. We first walked up to the upper pool and Cascata del Pozzón, but there wasn’t much space to lie down in the shadow. So we walked down again, to the perfect spot with a nice emerald green pool with refreshing water. First it was okay with some people but later in the afternoon more and more people wanted to go for a swim. It was a Saturday in July with warm weather, so I understand why.
Cascata del Pozzón drops into a large natural pool surrounded by boulders and slabs of rock that have been carved out by water and the elements over the centuries. The lower drop is 13 meter high and together with the other visible drops Cascata del Pozzón is 24 meters high (measured), but I think there are more drops and the height must be taller.
The river Nala is also used for canyoning, a nice way to explore all drops of the river Nala and Cascata del Pozzón. At the pond you can see ropes where people climb up themselves and then jump down over 13 meters.
Other waterfalls worthwhile to visit along motorway 2 (E35) are Cascata di Santa Petronilla, Cascata di Ticinetto and Cascata Piumogna. All very scenic waterfalls, two of them, also a perfect swimming spot.
