Cascade du Nant Debout
(cascade de la Balme de Thuy, cascade de Morette)
Cascade du Nant Debout or nowadays referred as cascade de Morette is a beautiful waterfall in springtime. Cascade de Morette is located east of La Balme de Thuy (not far from Lac d’Annecy) in the Haute Savoie, France.
From Annecy take road D909 to la Balme de Thuy/Thones. In Thuy Dessous turn left onto the D216. After 600 meters there is a small road going right to the parking of Cascade de Morette. This is shortly after the cave ‘de Notre-Dame de Lourdes’. Just before the cave there are two small waterfalls along the road you can’t miss. I named them ‘cascade de la Balme de Thuy’.
Just before you turn right to the parking you already can see a lower part of the river. Also very nice to see, but the upper part is gorgeous. From the free parking it is a short walk to Cascade de Morette. The walk runs along a free climbing rock wall. Soon you will arrive at the lower part of the waterfall (the picture left/above). If you walk a little further you can walk up a little where you can see a bigger single drop. The surrounding is gorgeous and suitable for playing with children. If you want you can walk further down the trail where you can choose to go to Nant Debout or down to the road (D216, near the crossing with D909).
Back at the free parking there is a toilet, if you need one. Best time to visit cascade de Morette is in springtime when there is enough water in the river Nant Debout. We visited the waterfall twice when staying at lac d’Annecy in May. Last time was in 2022.
When staying or visiting lac d’Annecy you must visit the gorgeous and impressing cascade d’Angon. I am not sure if there is much water in the river in summertime, but if so, go visit it and be surprised!
