Raggaschlucht wasserfall
(Raga Klamm)
The Raggaschlucht wasserfall is a series of waterfalls in one of the most spectacular gorges in Austria. Raggaschlucht wasserfall is located 6 kilometers west of Obervellach near a small village called Schmelzhutten in the region Kärnten, Austria. The admission in 2023 for an adult was €9 but with a Kärnten card the entrance is free. I got is for free from my hotel.
I stayed near the Millstatter see at Bad Klein Kirchheim and within an hour I reached the free parking at the Raggaschlucht. There are signs along the road and you can’t miss. I parked the car at the big parking near the river but there are also limited spot at the entrance of the gorge.
From the parking take the left road to the entrance (right is a little bit longer). After 5 minutes you already see the first drops in the gorge. The next 30 minutes you will be surprised by the beauty of all those waterfalls with a bigger drop at the end of the gorge (15-20 meter?). The way back through the forrest was a little steep at the end and a roundtrip took me 60 minutes. This a perfect trip with children but only at the way back be careful!
The Raggaschlucht is since 1978 a natural monument and one of the most beautiful and spectacular gorges in the Alps. The Raggaschlucht was made accessible in 1882. The Raggaschlucht is 800 meters long with several waterfalls and overhanging rock walls. The Raggaschlucht is a deep and narrow gorge (in some places you can’t see the sky anymore) and is a must to visit. The walk takes about 1 hour and the biggest waterfall is about 20 meters high. In total the Raggabach descends 200 meters.
Best time to visit the Raggaschlucht wasserfall is in summertime at midday when the sun shines into the gorge.
There are several other great waterfalls nearby and the closest (you must visit) is a gorge with 4 big waterfalls in the Groppensteiner schlucht (Raufen). For a day trip you can take the Grossglocknerstrasse with numerous big waterfalls. My favorites: Jungfernsprung and the Gössnitzfall.
