Cascade de Couz
(cascade de St Cassin, Cascades de St Thibault de couz)
Cascade de Couz or cascade de St Cassin is a beautiful waterfall southwest of Chambery along road D1006. Just before the Hamlet “La Cascade” a 50 meter high waterfall shows up at the left side of the road, Cascade de Couz.
May 2022 we visited the waterfall but I didn’t noticed it when driving on the road. Cascade de Couz is easy to reach. There is a parking at 200 meters from the base of the waterfall (gps 45.533672, 5.864582). Walk back to the railway, cross it and go left following the railway. There is a small wooden sign saying “cascade” It is a short walk through the forrest to the base of the waterfall. After heavy rainfall a second waterfall appears at the right of Cascade de Couz.
Cascade de Couz is appr 50-70 meters high (single drop) and is situated in an unnamed river. I can’t figure out how a small unnamed river can feed such a waterfall. My french isn’t good enough but I understand that several famous writers were inspired by Cascade de Couz.
My best pictures are taken from the railway where you have a clear view on the total drop of 70 meter. But is always nice when standing at the base of a waterfall and it takes little time. A must to visit when you are in the area.
